Let’s talk about Susan Lucci, the iconic soap opera star who’s been lighting up screens for decades. You’d think that after undergoing emergency heart surgery last fall, she’d tell everyone in her life how lucky she feels to be alive. But guess what? That’s not the case. In a recent chat with Us Weekly, Susan revealed that there’s one person she hasn’t told yet—her mom, Jeannette. And no, she has no plans to spill the beans anytime soon.
Why Susan Lucci Kept Her Heart Surgery a Secret
At the ADAPT Leadership Awards in NYC on March 14, the 72-year-old star opened up about her decision. “You know, the truth is I didn’t tell her,” Susan shared. “My mother was a nurse on top of it, and I just didn’t want to scare her.” Can you blame her? When your mom’s a nurse, the last thing you want to do is give her a reason to worry, especially when it comes to something as serious as heart surgery.
Mom’s Big Day: Celebrating Jeannette’s 102nd Birthday
Now, let’s switch gears to some happy news. Jeannette recently celebrated her 102nd birthday! For the special occasion, Susan—best known for her role as Erica Kane on All My Children—headed down to Florida to celebrate with her husband, Helmut Huber, whom she’s been married to since 1969. Imagine celebrating such a milestone with your loved ones by your side. It’s a moment that truly highlights the importance of family and cherished memories.

Susan took to Instagram to share the joyous moment, posting a picture of her mom with the first piece of cake. “Beautiful Birthday Girl with the first piece of cake—getting ready to make a wish and blow out the candles!!!” she wrote. “My mom had such a happy day—her wonderful son-in-law and I are so elated that we were there to celebrate my mom’s 102nd with her!!! What an achievement, Mom!!!”

Susan’s Honest Reason for Keeping Quiet
Susan also revealed that her late father, Victor, plays a big role in why she hasn’t been forthcoming with her mom. Victor passed away in November 2002 due to heart disease. “We haven’t talked about it. I don’t want to,” Susan admitted, expressing her hope that her mom hasn’t heard the news elsewhere. “You know my dad passed away from [heart disease], so I don’t want to bring it up. But he lived to be in his eighties.” It’s clear that Susan’s decision comes from a place of love and protection for her mom.
Reflecting on a Scary Health Scare
Just last month, Susan opened up about the health scare that led to her emergency surgery. At first, she ignored the pain and tightness in her chest, thinking it might go away on its own. But eventually, she made the right call and headed to the emergency room. The diagnosis? A 90 percent blockage in one artery and a 70 percent blockage in another. According to her cardiologist, if left untreated, Susan could have suffered a significant heart attack or even sudden death. Yikes, right?

Susan now sees her experience as a second chance at life and is using it to inspire others. “Even if it’s one person I help,” she noted at the time. “That is someone’s life.”
As for what’s next for Susan, don’t worry—she’s not planning on stepping away from the spotlight anytime soon. Last year, she told Closer Weekly that retirement isn’t in her vocabulary. In fact, she’s open to returning to Dancing With the Stars and credits her youthful spirit to never having the desire to slow down. No matter what life throws her way, we know this TV legend will always bounce back with grace and style.
