Carol Burnett Teams Up With Tina Fey For A Heartfelt Film Adaptation Of 'Carrie And Me'

Carol Burnett's memoir about late daughter Carrie Hamilton to be made

Here’s a story that’s got me leaning in: legendary TV icon Carol Burnett is teaming up with the one and only Tina Fey to bring a deeply personal film to life. And get this—it's based on Carol’s own best-selling memoir, Carrie and Me, which chronicles her incredible bond with her daughter, Carrie Hamilton. When you’ve got two powerhouse talents like these collaborating on such a meaningful project, you just know it’s going to be something special.

Carrie and Me, published back in 2013, is far more than just a memoir—it’s a raw, heartfelt tribute to the complex relationship between a mother and her daughter. In a review by Booklist, Margaret Flanagan beautifully captures the essence of the book: “Carol Burnett, the beloved comic actress and author, has crafted a deeply moving tribute to her late daughter, Carrie Hamilton. The book doesn’t shy away from the tough stuff, openly addressing Carrie’s battles with drug addiction and her arduous journey through rehab. But it’s not all darkness. After overcoming those challenges, Carrie went on to carve out a successful career for herself both as an actress and a writer. Tragically, Carrie passed away at the age of 38 from lung cancer. Before she passed, she asked her mom to finish a story she had started called Sunrise to Memphis. While Carol couldn’t bring herself to complete it, she found a different way to honor her daughter’s memory—by weaving together letters from Carrie with her own stories and memories to create an intimate portrait of their relationship. To top it off, Burnett includes the unfinished Sunrise to Memphis as a tribute to her daughter’s creative legacy.”

  • As we’ve heard from Closer Weekly, the relationship between Carol and Carrie wasn’t always smooth sailing, especially during Carrie’s teenage years. Carol opened up about how things were back then: “She got sober when she was 17. I put her in a third rehab center, and let me tell you, she hated me for it. I realized I had to love her enough to let her hate me. That was a tough pill to swallow, but it paid off. Carrie got sober, and our bond grew stronger. We even started working together—writing a play, collaborating on three shows. It was a beautiful chapter in our lives.”

Bringing Their Story to the Big Screen

According to Deadline, the upcoming film will dive deep into the highs and lows of Carol’s life as a working mother, actress, and producer, all seen through the lens of her relationship with Carrie. It’s going to be a powerful exploration of their journey together—full of laughter, tears, and everything in between. Now, the big question is: when will it hit theaters? Unfortunately, no production start or release date has been announced yet, but you can bet we’ll be counting down the days until it does.
