Let's rewind to 1966 when The Hollywood Squares first premiered on NBC. The man at the helm, Peter Marshall, became an instant hit with audiences. Before he became a game show legend, Peter Marshall was part of a comedy duo with Tommy Noonan, performing on TV and writing material for other acts. In the early '60s, he transitioned to theater, starring opposite the incredible Chita Rivera in the West End production of Bye Bye Birdie. When the call came to audition for The Hollywood Squares, Peter wasn't exactly expecting to land the gig. "I was out playing golf and thought there was no way they'd hire me," he once shared with Closer magazine. "I even showed up in shorts for the audition because I figured it didn't matter." Little did he know, this decision would change his life forever.
Producers were immediately captivated by Peter's charm and charisma. Initially, he thought hosting the show would be a temporary gig—just 13 weeks before returning to Broadway. But as it turned out, his natural chemistry with the celebrity panelists and contestants made him the perfect fit. The Hollywood Squares skyrocketed in popularity, becoming a ratings powerhouse in the competitive game show landscape. "It was such a blast," Peter recalled fondly. "We'd film five shows in just five hours, and it never felt like work. We'd break for lunch, have some laughs, and keep going. It was pure fun."

In 1981, after 15 successful years, the original run of The Hollywood Squares came to an end. Peter didn't stop there, though. He appeared in several popular TV shows like CHiPs, The Love Boat, Hotel, and Automan. A revival of the show premiered in 1986 with original panelist John Davidson taking over as host, but Peter's impact on the series was undeniable.
Peter Marshall's Journey After 'The Hollywood Squares'
Throughout the '90s, Peter made occasional appearances on television, landing small roles in shows like Burke's Law, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and The Bold and the Beautiful. But by 2021, the In Living Color alum decided it was time to step away from the limelight entirely. He focused on enjoying life with his family, cherishing every moment as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Peter's personal life was filled with joy and heartbreak. He married Nadene R. Teaford, and together they welcomed four children: Pete LaCock, Suzanne LaCock, Jaime LaCock, and David LaCock. Tragically, in August 2021, Peter lost his son David to complications from COVID-19 at the age of 68. "It's devastating," Peter said, expressing his grief. "David was a wonderful man, an artist, and a loving father to his eight children and six grandchildren. Losing a child is one of the hardest things a parent can face."
