The iconic actor from Little House on the Prairie, Michael Landon, may have left us in 1991 at the age of 54, but his impact continues to resonate with his family and fans alike. “My dad is always on my mind,” shares Leslie Landon Matthews in an exclusive interview with Closer. “He was so sharp, incredibly generous, and had a brilliant sense of humor that never faded, even during his battle with pancreatic cancer. His positivity was truly inspiring, and it’s something I carry with me every single day.”
Family's Dedication to Fighting Pancreatic Cancer
The Landon family has been deeply committed to raising awareness about pancreatic cancer through their involvement with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN). This organization plays a crucial role in supporting those affected by the disease and advancing research. “We discovered PanCAN many years ago, and it’s been an extraordinary resource,” Leslie explains. “They provide invaluable services not only for patients but also for their families. Their dedication to research gives hope to so many people who are fighting this relentless disease.”
Pancreatic cancer ranks as the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, with a daunting five-year survival rate of only 13%. When Michael was diagnosed in 1991, resources were scarce. “Back then, there was practically no information available,” Leslie recalls. “My brother Mike and I spent countless hours in libraries, gathering books, and reaching out to institutions. It was such a challenge to stay informed about the latest research. That’s why PanCAN is such a game-changer—it’s like a one-stop shop for everything you need to know about pancreatic cancer.”

Hereditary Risks and Early Detection
Given the strong genetic component of pancreatic cancer, the Landon family has taken proactive steps to monitor their health. “Early detection is absolutely critical,” emphasizes Michael Landon Jr.. “Grail is one of the innovative tests available today that can screen for not just pancreatic cancer but over 50 other types of cancer. PanCAN strongly encourages anyone with a family history of the disease to undergo genetic testing to assess their risk.”
This vigilance has proven crucial for the family. Director Christopher Landon was diagnosed with kidney cancer in his 40s. “Thankfully, it was caught early, and he’s doing great now,” Leslie shares. “It’s a powerful reminder of how important it is to stay informed and vigilant, especially when you have a family history of cancer. Early screening can truly be life-saving.”

Joining the Fight: Team Little House
Recently, the Landon family formed “Team Little House” in honor of Michael for PurpleStride, PanCAN’s annual fundraising walk dedicated to ending pancreatic cancer.
