Setting the Stage: The World of X-Men
Dark Phoenix picks up right where X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) left off. At the helm of this cinematic adventure is Simon Kinberg, who not only writes but also directs the film. Kinberg has been a key figure in this franchise for years, and his fingerprints are all over other major projects like Michael B. Jordan's Fantastic Four and the legendary Star Wars saga. Despite the vast array of projects he's tackled, Kinberg admits that the X-Men universe continues to astonish him, especially given the incredible diversity within the series, including the gritty Logan and the irreverent Deadpool.
“I grew up absolutely obsessed with all these things,” Kinberg shares in an exclusive interview. “I devoured comics as a kid. If I had to pick one thing that shaped my childhood, it would be Star Wars. There are moments when I'm so deep into the writing or filmmaking process that I almost forget how monumental it all is. But then, there are these moments that hit me like a ton of bricks. It could be something as simple as remembering a comic book scene I read years ago or realizing that I’m crafting a pivotal moment for characters I've loved since I was a kid. There was this unforgettable moment during the filming of X-Men: Apocalypse when I saw Oscar Isaac, the actor who played Apocalypse, getting into his costume. He caught me staring, and we shared this unspoken nod of acknowledgment. I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I’m looking at Apocalypse, and I wrote the lines he's about to deliver.’ It’s surreal stuff, man. And trust me, I’ve had plenty of moments like that.”

A Universe of Possibilities
“Back when I was a kid,” Kinberg recalls, “I never imagined a world where we’d have two or three X-Men movies hitting theaters in the same year. But let’s be honest, I devoured tons of X-Men stories in a single year back then, and the sheer depth of characters and their stories make it possible. We’re always striving to give each movie its own distinct voice, so they don’t all feel like carbon copies of one another. Sure, they exist in the same universe and follow similar rules, but each one has its own flavor. Take Deadpool, for instance—it’s an R-rated, edgy, comedic ride that’s completely different from the traditional X-Men films. Then there’s Gambit, which is still in development, but it’s going to bring a whole new vibe to the table, with a New Orleans swagger that fans haven’t seen yet. Wolverine, on the other hand, has his own unique charm. James Mangold’s take on Logan was a game-changer, almost like a Clint Eastwood Western. We’ve been working hard to ensure that each movie feels like a fresh experience while still being part of the same universe.”
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to release on February 14, 2019.
