A Turning Point in Life: John Stamos Opens Up About His Journey to Sobriety
It’s been almost four years since John Stamos decided it was time to take control of his life and commit to sobriety. At a heartfelt Writers in Treatment event on February 28, the beloved star of "Fuller House" revealed how his TV niece, Jodie Sweetin, played a pivotal role in helping him walk away from alcohol. During the event, John, now 55, presented Jodie, 37, with the nonprofit organization’s Experience, Strength and Hope Award, honoring her for her 2009 memoir, Unsweetined. “I hit rock bottom,” John admitted candidly, highlighting the moment he realized he needed to make a change.
The Road to Recovery: A Difficult but Necessary Journey
John didn’t make the decision to get sober overnight. It wasn’t until he received a DUI in 2015 that the actor finally recognized the need for change. “It took me a long time, a really long time, disappointing everyone who cared about me,” he reflected. But when John finally reached out for help, he found an unexpected ally in Jodie Sweetin. “Jodie lovingly allowed me to walk my own path,” he explained. “And when I finally humbled myself to ask for her help, I realized that the perky little blabbermouth I knew had grown into a woman of wisdom. She was right by my side during some of the most difficult days of my life.”

Jodie has been a beacon of hope for John, having maintained her own sobriety for over eight years. To help John find his footing, the former "Dancing With the Stars" contestant organized 12-step meetings at his house and on set. “Thank God, my wife, Caitlin McHugh, and my new son, Billy, will only know me as a sober husband and father,” John expressed gratefully. “This is Jodie’s legacy in my life.”

John wasn’t the only one with kind words at the event. Jodie, upon receiving the prestigious award, shared how proud she is of her TV uncle. “It’s been the greatest thing to watch someone you love have the light come back on again,” she gushed. Her admiration for John’s transformation was evident, as she celebrated his newfound strength and clarity.
