Madonna Opens Up About Battling Critics And Ageism In The Spotlight

Madonna Talks Fighting Ageism In The Music Industry And Says She's

She’s one of the most iconic figures in music history, but even Madonna isn’t immune to the harsh judgment of critics. In a candid interview with Vogue, the legendary performer revealed how she continues to face criticism, especially as she ages. Despite her unparalleled success, the "Material Girl" icon is still fighting against those who try to silence her voice.

Madonna shared her thoughts on the constant battle she faces in the entertainment industry. "People have always tried to silence me for one reason or another—whether it's because I’m not pretty enough, I don’t sing well enough, I’m not talented enough, or I’m not married enough. And now, it’s because I’m not young enough," she said. It’s clear that no matter how much she accomplishes, there will always be someone trying to tear her down.

Madonna’s Struggles with Ageism

Madonna went on to explain how ageism has become yet another hurdle in her career. "So they just keep trying to find a new angle to criticize me for simply being alive. Now I’m fighting ageism, and now I’m being punished for turning 60," she added. For someone who has been in the industry for over 35 years, you'd think she'd have earned the respect and admiration of her peers by now. But Madonna says she feels isolated in her journey, as she hasn't found much support from other women in the business.

Madonna’s Unique Journey in the Industry

Madonna admitted that she's never felt like she had true allies or role models within the industry. "There are no living role models for me because no one does what I do," she confessed. She expressed admiration for historical figures such as Simone de Beauvoir and Angela Davis, but noted that they didn’t share her experiences as a mother. "They didn’t have kids, so it’s hard to relate to them fully," she explained.

Being a single parent to six children while maintaining a successful career in music and activism is no small feat. "I continue to be creative, an artist, politically active, and have a voice—all while raising six kids. Honestly, there isn’t anyone in my position," Madonna emphasized. Her ability to balance family life with her professional pursuits is nothing short of extraordinary.
