Even though Lionel Richie has grown-up kids, he’s still all about having some fun with them. The legendary singer admits that he loves nothing more than embarrassing his children whenever the opportunity arises. Who knew being a dad could be this entertaining?
Richie's Take on Parenting: Humor is Key
At 70 years young, Lionel Richie isn’t slowing down, and neither is his sense of humor. In a recent chat with People, Richie opened up about his parenting style when it comes to his three famous offspring: Nicole Richie, 37, Sofia Richie, 20, and Miles Richie, 24. He shared, “I’m a tough dad, but life is all about balance, and humor is a big part of that.”
Richie went on to explain how his kids have a knack for keeping him on his toes. “Their job is to completely scare me to death, and let me tell you, they’re doing an outstanding job!” he joked. It seems like Richie isn’t just a doting father but also a playful one, always ready to bring a smile to his children’s faces.

Embarrassing His Kids: A Parental Duty?
Richie confessed to People that he recently told Nicole, “My job is to embarrass you guys as much as possible while I’m still around. And trust me, you’re doing the same to me, so it’s a fair trade.” It’s clear that Richie values the bond he shares with his children, even if it involves a little playful teasing.
Reflecting on his own childhood, Richie remembered the look of bewilderment on his parents' faces when he told them about his dreams with The Commodores. “We were the Black Beatles, and we were going to take over the world!” he recalled with a laugh. “Now, when Nicole, Miles, and Sofia come to me with their ideas, I see the same look on my face that my parents had. It’s a humbling experience, and I use that as a reminder to stay grounded.”
Family Comes First
Richie, who serves as a judge on American Idol, adopted Nicole with his first wife, Brenda Harvey, and shares Sofia and Miles with his ex-wife, Diane Alexander. Despite their different backgrounds, all three of his children have carved out successful careers for themselves. Richie is proud of their achievements and has always been open about the importance of family.

In a past interview with Closer Weekly, Richie expressed his heartfelt thoughts on family. “At the end of the day, my name isn’t Lionel Richie, the singer—it’s Dad and Papa. That’s the most humbling part of all my successes. Knowing that there’s a group of people who will be there for you in your final days, who love you unconditionally, is the greatest achievement. Everything else is just the icing on the cake.”

Richie’s approach to parenting is a testament to his love for his family. Whether it’s through laughter, support, or just being there for them, Lionel Richie continues to be the ultimate dad.
