It might sound surprising, but hear her out—there's a powerful message behind her words.

How IDA Changed Carrie's Life

In an interview with People, the stunning 51-year-old opened up about her diagnosis with Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) six years ago. "Once I was diagnosed, it’s like I got my life back," she revealed. Carrie went on to explain how this experience transformed her perspective on health. "I am so grateful," she said. "There’s a blessing in some of these health conditions because it gives you a greater awareness of your own well-being. It makes you prioritize self-care and realize how crucial regular doctor visits and routine checkups are to maintaining a healthy lifestyle."

Before the Diagnosis: A Difficult Journey

Carrie, who got emotional while discussing her battle with fibromyalgia on the April 30 episode of The Talk, admitted that life was incredibly tough before she found answers. "Some people start to feel the way I did—like, 'Oh, maybe I’m just getting old, and this is the beginning of the end,'" she explained. "I was in my early forties, thinking, 'Is this what happens? Am I just going to become lethargic, unable to do anything, and completely incapacitated?'"

After enduring years of suffering, Carrie finally sought help from her doctor, who recommended blood and iron panel tests. While she admitted feeling nervous about the results, she was relieved to learn that she wasn't alone. Nearly five million adults in the U.S. live with IDA every day, and knowing this helped ease her concerns.

The Emotional Side of Invisible Illnesses

Carrie got emotional while discussing her health challenges during the show. "I have all these autoimmune conditions, and I’m in a really bad flare," she said, her voice trembling. "It sounds so silly, but people who have these invisible illnesses—whether it’s rheumatoid arthritis or a gastrointestinal issue—often feel immense shame when going through these struggles. I want to be the person people see. And people see a healthy person from the outside."

The In Living Color star continued, "I look healthy, and I am really healthy—all things considered. But then I have these incredible sharp pains, like today when the hairstylist was doing my hair. He barely touched me, but I thought he burned me with a curling iron because my body is in a fibromyalgia flare. It’s frustrating, but it’s part of my reality right now."
