Carrie Ann Inaba Discusses Struggles With Autoimmune Condition

Let me tell you, life has thrown some tough challenges at Carrie Ann Inaba, but she’s not backing down. The Dancing with the Stars judge recently got real on The Talk about her ongoing battle with fibromyalgia, an autoimmune condition that leaves her in excruciating pain. It was a raw and emotional moment that resonated with so many people who are silently fighting their own battles.

Carrie Ann's Honest Moment About Invisible Illnesses

On the Tuesday, April 30, episode of The Talk, Carrie Ann, who’s now 51, opened up about the challenges she faces with fibromyalgia. She was visibly emotional as she explained, “I have all these autoimmune conditions, and right now, I’m in a really bad flare. It might sound silly to some, but for those of us dealing with invisible illnesses—whether it’s rheumatoid arthritis, gastrointestinal issues, or something else—it’s a daily struggle.”

She went on to say, “I feel so much shame when I go through these things because I want to be the person people see. And from the outside, I look perfectly healthy. But inside, it’s a different story. Today, for instance, my hairstylist was doing my hair, and he barely touched me, but it felt like he burned me with a curling iron. That’s how intense the pain can be during a fibromyalgia flare.”

    Why Sharing Her Journey Matters

Despite the challenges, Carrie Ann has a powerful reason for speaking out. She wants to encourage others who might be feeling the same way. “I want to encourage people because even though I feel shame, I know deep down that I shouldn’t feel that way,” she shared. “It’s embarrassing, and sometimes you just can’t get a handle on it. It’s about self-acceptance, and learning to be kind to yourself through it all.”

She’s not alone in this fight, though. Many people are battling the same condition. According to the Centers for Disease Control, fibromyalgia is a condition that causes widespread pain, sleep problems, fatigue, and emotional and mental distress. It’s a tough road, but Carrie Ann’s openness is helping to shine a light on the struggles many face silently.

    Carrie Ann’s Dreams of Motherhood

While dealing with her health challenges, Carrie Ann is also thinking about the next chapter in her life—motherhood. She’s considering adopting a child, something she’s dreamed of for a long time. “I would love to be a mom,” she once told People. “I’ve thought about adopting, and I’ve even considered fostering to adopt. It’s something I’ve always wanted.”

Of course, she admits she’s nervous about the possibility of becoming a single parent, especially at her age. “As a single woman in her 50s, I want to make sure I’ll have the energy, and that it’s fair to the child,” she explained. “But I’m taking steps. I saw the movie Instant Family, and it inspired me. I’m probably going to take one of those foster parenting classes. It’s definitely on my list!”
