Hey there, friends. If you've been eagerly waiting for the return of HBO’s hit drama Big Little Lies, you’re in for a treat. The show is set to come back on June 9, and it's bringing with it seven powerful episodes. Here's the scoop: Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz are all back, and guess what? Meryl Streep is joining the cast! How amazing is that? But, hold on to your hats because this season is also the grand finale of the series. That’s right, folks. This is it!
Why Is This the Final Season?
Series creator and executive producer David E. Kelley opened up about the decision to end the show after this season. He shared, “There’s no such plan now to do a Season 3. We wanted to give closure to the story at the end of Season 2, and that’s probably where we’ll leave it.” Nicole Kidman, who also serves as a producer alongside Reese Witherspoon, chimed in, “There’s no plan for a third season. And let’s be honest, this was a long and demanding shoot for us. It was a massive amount of work. But artistically, this season has its own identity, and we hope it will be appreciated that way. It was made with a ton of love and dedication.”
The "Monterey Five" and Their Journey
The upcoming season will focus on the so-called “Monterey Five” as they navigate their lives post-last season's dramatic events. Reese Witherspoon shared some insights, saying, “We were incredibly lucky that Liane Moriarty, the author of the original novel, provided us with almost a novella to use as a foundation. This gave us a strong basis for each character’s development. And let’s face it, everyone had unresolved issues that needed addressing.”

Meryl Streep Joins the Cast
David Kelley also mentioned, “We didn’t want to continue the series unless we felt we could live up to the high standards we set in the first season. When we return, the characters’ lives appear to be perfectly put together on the surface, but as always, cracks begin to show. Once those cracks widen, things escalate quickly.” In Season 2, Meryl Streep plays the role of Louise Wright, the mother of Nicole Kidman’s character Celeste’s abusive husband, Perry Wright (played by Alexander Skarsgård). Meryl explained her decision to join the show, saying, “I was hooked on this show from the start. It was an incredible exploration of what we know versus what we don’t about people, families, and friends. For me, as someone with four grown children, playing a character dealing with the consequences of her parenting was fascinating. It’s honest and real, and that’s what drew me in.”
Big Little Lies returns to HBO for its second and final season on June 9.
